Driving in Aruba FAQ

Everything you need to know about renting a car and driving in Aruba. From traffic rules to the best beaches — we've got you covered.

Getting Started

Is it hard to drive in Aruba?

No, driving in Aruba is quite easy! Aruba drives on the right side of the road (same as the US and most of Europe). The island is small (about 20 miles long), roads are well-maintained, and traffic is generally light outside of Oranjestad during rush hour.

The main things to be aware of:

• Roundabouts are common - yield to traffic already in the circle

• Speed limits are in kilometers per hour (typically 40-60 km/h)

• Some roads to remote beaches may be unpaved

• Traffic in Oranjestad can be busy during morning and evening rush hours

Do I need an international driver's license in Aruba?

For most visitors, no international driver's license is required. Aruba accepts valid driver's licenses from:

• United States

• Canada

• United Kingdom

• European Union countries

• Most other countries

Your license must be valid and in the Latin alphabet. If your license is in a non-Latin script (e.g., Chinese, Arabic, Japanese), you will need an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your original license.

You must be at least 21 years old to rent a car from Mitoo Car Rental, and your license must have been held for at least 2 years.

What side of the road do they drive on in Aruba?

Aruba drives on the RIGHT side of the road, just like the United States, Canada, and most of continental Europe. If you're from the UK, Australia, or Japan, you'll need to adjust to driving on the opposite side. Our cars have the steering wheel on the left side.

Exploring Aruba

Can I take a rental car to the Natural Pool (Conchi)?

The Natural Pool (Conchi) is located in Arikok National Park and requires driving on rough, unpaved roads. Here's what you need to know:

Our Policy:

• Standard sedans and compact cars: NOT recommended for Natural Pool access

• SUVs and 4x4 vehicles: Can access the Natural Pool, but please drive carefully

• We do NOT prohibit 4x4 rentals from visiting, but damage from off-road driving may not be covered by basic insurance

Important: The road to Conchi is rocky and challenging. Many rental companies prohibit this trip entirely. If you want to visit in a regular car, we recommend booking a guided tour instead.

Tip: The Natural Pool is best visited early morning before tour groups arrive!

Can I drive to Arikok National Park?

Yes! Arikok National Park is accessible by car and is one of Aruba's must-see attractions. The main roads within the park are paved and suitable for all vehicles.

However, some attractions within the park (like the Natural Pool/Conchi) require unpaved roads. For these areas, a 4x4 or SUV is strongly recommended.

Park entrance fee: $15 per person (not included in car rental)

Hours: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM daily

Where can I take my rental car in Aruba?

You can drive your Mitoo rental car anywhere on the island! Popular destinations include:

Beaches: Eagle Beach, Palm Beach, Baby Beach, Arashi Beach, Boca Catalina

Attractions: California Lighthouse, Alto Vista Chapel, Arikok National Park, Natural Bridge

Towns: Oranjestad (capital), San Nicolas, Noord, Santa Cruz

Restrictions:

• Do not drive on the beach (sand damages vehicles and it's illegal)

• Use caution on unpaved roads with standard vehicles

• The Natural Pool road is only suitable for 4x4/SUV vehicles

Traffic Rules & Tips

What are the traffic rules in Aruba?

Here are the essential traffic rules for driving in Aruba:

Speed Limits:

• Urban areas: 30-40 km/h (about 18-25 mph)

• Main roads: 60 km/h (about 37 mph)

• Highways: 80 km/h (about 50 mph)

General Rules:

• Drive on the RIGHT side

• Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers

• Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited

• Right turns on red are NOT allowed unless signed

• Yield to traffic already in roundabouts

Roundabouts: Aruba has many roundabouts. Always yield to vehicles already in the circle, and signal when exiting.

Parking: Free parking is available at most beaches. In Oranjestad, look for metered parking or parking lots.

How do roundabouts work in Aruba?

Roundabouts (traffic circles) are very common in Aruba. Here's how to navigate them:

1. Approach: Slow down as you approach the roundabout

2. Yield: Give way to traffic already in the circle (coming from your left)

3. Enter: When clear, enter the roundabout

4. Signal: Use your right turn signal when exiting

5. Exit: Exit at your desired road

Tips:

• Stay in your lane

• Don't stop inside the roundabout

• Larger vehicles may need more space - give them room

• When in doubt, go around again!
